When Katrina exposed the lack of coordinated and effective relief efforts, myself and many other volunteers from Kansas City and the surrounding community organized a relief effort to bring needed supplies to those in need. Having seen first hand the chaos that follows a catastrophe, I know the magnitude of need can often overwhelm relief agencies. From this, I learned many lessons. Among them is that our impressions of disaster and the relief efforts are often inaccurate as the media often misses the mark on what is and is not effective relief. Among the many indelible images the devastation left on me, there also remains the on the ground, immediate, and effective efforts of Heart to Heart International.
